Abstract:

The Great Nicobar Project represents one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure initiatives and has emerged as a significant case for examining the evolving meaning of development in the twenty-first century. Envisioned as a strategic maritime and economic hub, the project aims to enhance trade connectivity, strengthen India’s presence in the Indo-Pacific region and stimulate regional growth through the construction of a transshipment port, international airport and supporting infrastructure. While the project reflects aspirations of economic expansion and geopolitical positioning, it has simultaneously generated intense debate regarding environmental sustainability, indigenous rights and inclusive governance. This article critically analyses the project through political, economic and ecological perspectives to highlight the complex trade-offs embedded in large-scale development initiatives. It argues that the Great Nicobar Project illustrates the broader global shift from a narrow growth-centric model of development to a more holistic framework that integrates sustainability, social justice and long-term resilience. By examining governance challenges, economic promises and ecological risks, the article underscores the need for transparent decision-making, community participation and environmentally responsible planning. The study concludes that the Great Nicobar Project serves as a test case for India’s future development trajectory and emphasises the importance of balancing economic ambition with ecological preservation and social inclusion.
