India–Pakistan relations represent one of the most enduring and complex rivalries in international politics. Since their emergence as independent states in 1947, both countries have experienced persistent hostility rooted in historical grievances, territorial disputes, ideological differences, and security dilemmas. The relationship has been marked by wars, militarized crises, nuclear competition, terrorism, and repeated failures of peace initiatives. Despite geographical proximity, cultural affinities, and shared colonial experiences, mutual distrust has prevented the normalization of relations. This research paper examines the historical evolution of India–Pakistan relations, analyzes core contentious issues such as the Kashmir dispute, terrorism, nuclear rivalry, and diplomatic engagement, and evaluates contemporary developments and future prospects for peace and stability in South Asia. The study argues that without sustained dialogue, confidence-building measures, and a reorientation of security perceptions, India–Pakistan relations will continue to oscillate between confrontation and uneasy calm.
