In recent days socio economic problems in the society are becoming complicated due to changing socio-economical situation in the society. In India we have long-term tradition of social service. The humanitarian value system in the society is effective since centuries. the ideology of religious literature plays important role to establish value system in the society. The concept of modern social work is emerged from humanitarian and democratic ideals of our society. Social Work values are based on respect for the equality and dignity of each person in the society. Human rights and social justice are motivating factors of social work action. Social work is a modern profession which addresses the barriers inequalities and injustices in the society. The mission of the social work is to help people to develop a potential to face their problems, solve them and enrich their lives. Social work utilizes various types of skills, technique and activities for social work intervention. Social Work intervenes in the society through social case work, group work, clinical social work, counseling, community organization, social welfare administration. social work research, social action etc. The need of hour is that modern professional approach of social work and the traditional foundation of humanitarian approach should go hand in hand for overall social development of the society. This paper is an effort to explain the importance of humanitarian approach while working as a professional social worker.
